We love Hong Kong and have served Hong Kong for many years.
We are deeply saddened to see that the Government’s insistence on ramming through The Fugitive Offenders and the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019 have sparked deep concern and controversies. Yet the Chief Executive is oblivious and, in total disregard of normal legislative procedure, insists that the Bill be passed by the end of this month. Despite the peaceful march of over a million protesters in sweltering heat, the Chief Executive is unmoved and still bent on the resumption of the second reading of the Bill on 12th June. This is not only a departure from the principle of responsible government but has provoked public anger and directly led to the bloody conflict between the Police and countless young people who bravely came forward in an attempt to stop the passage of the Bill, and have been injured in the process. This is our future generation to be cherished, how can anyone with a heart not be pained to see the treatment they received?
A deeply divided society, serious concerns of the international community – are these the sacrifices to be made to satisfy the will of the Chief Executive? What great public interest is supposed to be served by the hurried passage of this Bill? Where will this escalation of police force to suppress protest lead Hong Kong?
We call on the Chief Executive to yield to public opinion and withdraw the Bill for more thorough deliberation. We call on her governing team, including all Principal Officials and members of the Executive Council to do their duty to advise her so to do because they are part of her administration, share her responsibilities collectively in being accountable to the people. Should their advice be ignored, we call upon them to resign. We also call upon all pro-establishment legislators; they hold the majority in Legco, without their vote, the Bill cannot pass. We call upon them to respond to the deep concern of the people and declare their stand now that if the Bill is not withdrawn, they will vote against it.
